The East Asia Culture club hosted its third annual Lunar New Year Celebration Jan. 29 after school. Co-President of the East Asia Culture Club Max Preiser (‘20) said that it is important to support the Lunar New Year Celebration because it holds value for members of the community.
“It is something that we as a global community should celebrate as well even if we necessarily are not directly connected to it,” he said.
The event provided a spread of typical East Asian cuisine including dumplings, spring rolls and boba tea. Some activities included different games with prizes, paper cutting and other Lunar New Year traditions.
Preiser said that he believes that in order to fulfill the “cultural competency” aspect of the mission statement, students should be promoting and participating in a variety of cultural events.
“My understanding is that one big part of the mission statement is cultural competency and I am really excited that this is a part of our mission statement but I think in order for us to actually realize the goals of that statement, we have to be promoting activities like this that are showing a variety of different cultures that aren’t necessarily our own,” he said.
