Grade 12 graduation will take place at Central Hall Westminster with extra COVID-19 regulations and will be available to watch over livestream. Grade 12 students may only invite two guests and will be seated on the ground floor rather than the stage.

Following presidential speeches via Zoom May 10, members of the Sustainability Council elected their new co-presidents. The newly elected co-presidents are Louisa Linkas (’21) and Cece Muecke (’21), who are taking over from former co-presidents Dom Alberts (’20) and Kenzie Morris (’20).

Linkas said she has always been passionate about sustainability and caring for the earth. 

“I grew up around nature when I was young,” she said. “I loved nature so much and began researching and understanding climate change more and had learned about it more [in] depth during freshman year.”

Linkas said she wants to lead SusCo because she said that she believes the council makes a big difference within the school community. 

“I wanted to become a leader of this council because there is so much potential that any large council can do within the school,” she said. “Just looking at what we’ve accomplished in the past years had a large impact on ASL and the community around us made me want to become a bigger part of the council.” 

Similarly to Linkas, Muecke said that she feels that SusCo enables her to have a greater impact on humanity’s treatment of the earth. 

“I am obviously very passionate about the environment and it’s because my whole life I have had this idea that I wanted to make the world a better place, which is kind of cheesy, but it’s true,” she said. “I felt as though SusCo would be a good place for me to meet that goal.”

Looking ahead to next school year, Linkas said she is excited to take on more projects including those that were put on pause by the closure of campus.  

“The fashion show got canceled, so we are planning to continue that next year,” she said. “We [were] also look[ing] into getting a green wall this year, so we are going to continue pursuing that idea next year as well. It would probably [be] a year-long project.” 

Furthermore, Muecke also said that she feels that a big aspect of SusCo is shedding light on environmental issues, which they have started to do more through their new website. 

“We also want to keep raising awareness and getting other people beyond the council passionate about the environment,”she said. “We recently launched our blog/website and that’s been a great avenue to get other people on board with our ideas of sustainability.” 

However, the main issue Linkas said SusCo aims to tackle over the next few years is reducing the school’s carbon footprint as much as possible by going carbon neutral as a school. 

“Looking towards our goals, we want to reduce plastic, we want to reduce waste,” she said, “but the main thing that we are working towards is going to be a multi-year plan in going carbon neutral as a school.”
