14 new students reflect on their transition to the High School

The sound of footsteps and chatter filling the hallways can only mean one thing; school is back in session. For many, the coronavirus pandemic ensured that this would not be the ASL they have seen in the past, but for others, they never saw it look otherwise. Fourteen new students shared their experience of starting at a new school amid Covid-19 measures and give a glimpse of themselves and their experience so far.

Anna Reznick
Anna Reznick, Lead Culture Editor
Anna Reznick (’24) is the Lead Culture Editor for The Standard. After joining the publication in Grade 9, she discovered a passion for review writing, specifically about fashion. When not in the newsroom, Reznick can be found stalking the Vogue website or checking the fashion month calendar. 
Emma Lucas
Emma Lucas, Opinions Editor: Print
Emma Lucas (’23) is the Opinions Editor: Print for The Standard. She started journalism in Grade 10 as a staff writer and also expresses her passion for writing in Commonground, Jambalaya and Writers’ Seminar. Lucas is keen on exploring interdisciplinary links between studies, being an avid STEM and humanities student. Beyond The Standard, she is co-President of the Student-Faculty Disciplinary Board and the Model United Nations club.
Rudi Chamria
Rudi Chamria, Deputy Editor-in-Chief: Online
Rudi Chamria (’24) is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief: Online of The Standard. She joined the newspaper in Grade 9 as a staff writer because she enjoys connecting with people through interviewing and utilizing her platform to highlight underrepresented voices. In addition to her role on The Standard, Chamria leads the Social Justice Council, plays tennis and engages in community service.
Antoine Warnery
Antoine Warnery, Opinions Editor: Online
Antoine Warnery (’23) is the Opinions Editor: Online for The Standard. Warnery joined The Standard in Grade 10 to share his perspective on controversial topics and global affairs. Outside journalism, Warnery is an avid debater and MUN leader. Warnery has chaired international competitions at Cambridge University and is a member of the secretariat at the West London Model UN conference at ASL.
Elena Alexander
Elena Alexander, Sports Editor: Print
Elena Alexander (’23) is Sports Editor: Print of The Standard. Having attended ASL since Grade 5, Alexander began journalism in Grade 10 and was the Features Editor: Online in Grade 11. Alexander appreciates journalism for community involvement and understanding and representing different perspectives. Alexander also participates in Model UN and the Student Council. Outside of the publication, Alexander is the varsity girls’ volleyball captain and participates in track and field.
Vittoria Di Meo
Vittoria Di Meo, Sports Editor: Online
Vittoria Di Meo (’24) is the Sports Editor: Online for The Standard and this is her fourth year in the publication. Di Meo started writing for the Middle School newspaper, The Scroll in Grade 8 and soon found an instant attraction to journalism. Di Meo loves writing and is excited by the opportunity to shine light on current events. Outside of The Standard Di Meo has tried out all kinds of sports but has discovered she mostly enjoys running by herself to listen to music and challenge limits.
Clara Martinez
Clara Martinez, Editor-in-Chief
Clara Martinez (’24) is the Editor-in-Chief for The Standard. She began journalism as an editor of the Middle School newspaper The Scroll and joined The Standard in Grade 9. Martinez is drawn to investigative news stories and profiles, although she does enjoy producing the occasional broadcast or photo gallery. In or out of the newsroom, she can always be found with a pocket-sized notebook and pen in hand.
Eden Leavey
Eden Leavey, Deputy Editor-in-Chief: Print
Eden Leavey (’24) is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief: Print of The Standard. Leavey’s passion for storytelling prompted her to join The Standard in Grade 9. Beyond journalism, she looks to tell stories through creative writing and photography as well as dance and movement. Separate from The Standard, Leavey leads the Sustainability Council and the Feminist Literature Book Club.
Anahi Pellathy
Anahi Pellathy, Culture Editor: Print
Anahi Pellathy (’23) is Print Editor: Culture for The Standard. She became a member of The Standard in Grade 10. Also a member of Commonground Magazine and the Social Justice Council as well as participating in a community partnership, Pellathy’s passions include journalism, social justice and the arts.
Sophia Bassi
Sophia Bassi, Lead News Editor
Sophia Bassi (’24) is the Lead News Editor for The Standard. She began exploring journalism in Grade 6 on the Middle School newspaper, The Scroll, and sees journalism as a powerful way to inform the community. Outside of The Standard, Bassi is on the Sustainability Council and plays competitive tennis.
Maddy Whitman
Maddy Whitman, Deputy Editor-in-Chief: Online
Maddy Whitman (’22) is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief: Online of The Standard. Whitman spent her Grade 11 year in the role of Media Director and was a Media Editor and staff writer in the two years prior. Whitman loves that she can combine her passions of photography and journalism to create work for The Standard. Outside of her role, Whitman enjoys baking, running, watching Formula 1 and following her football team, Fulham FC.
