The ASL Political Society, run by President Colin Bloom (’22) and Vice President Rodolphe Stern (’22), hosted a Zoom discussion with former Member of the European Parliament for South-East England Belinda de Lucy Oct. 8.

During the meeting, Bloom said participants were able to engage in conversation and ask de Lucy questions about her opinions on Brexit, COVID-19, immigration policy and other U.K. political matters.

The conflict we were having in our discussion was good because conflict spurs change, sways opinions and lets people decide themselves where they want to stand.

“Today’s discussion was very productive and the best it could have been,” he said. “We were trying to get our club members to see the perspective of a person who is involved in politics, especially regarding the topics we have been talking about this semester.”

Bloom said those attending the meeting took part in a debate, which was beneficial even though it elevated into argument at times.

“The conflict we were having in our discussion was good because conflict spurs change, sways opinions and lets people decide themselves where they want to stand,” he said.

De Lucy herself said she also felt pleased with the overall discussion.

“It was great for me, and I feel a huge responsibility talking to the young,” she said. “It made me realize how good it is that Colin has this platform where you can really question what you’re being sold.”
