Whether it be love stories entailing simple picnics in the park or writing poetic love letters, indulging in a rom-com from time to time is the perfect way to destress and have fun. Culture Editor: Online Grace Hamilton shares the best rom-coms of all time.

Whether it be love stories entailing simple picnics in the park or ones about writing poetic love letters, indulging in a rom-com from time to time is a way to destress and have fun that never fails. These are some of the greatest rom-coms of all time, from old classics to modern favorites, that all involve countless meet-cutes, spiraling drama and happy endings.

‘Clueless’ (1995)

“Clueless”  — nearly every rom-com lover has heard of it. Cher Horowitz, a shallow yet good-natured high school girl living in Beverly Hills, is at the top of the school social pecking order. In an attempt to improve her failing grades, she uses her matchmaking abilities to romantically pair two of her teachers together. However, when new boy Christopher joins the school, Cher plays matchmaker with herself and becomes obsessed with making him her new boyfriend. Lighthearted and witty, “Clueless” is a must-watch for all those who enjoy romantic comedies.

‘13 Going on 30’ (2004)

For anyone looking to watch a stereotypically cheesy yet entertaining rom-com, this movie is an excellent choice. “13 Going on 30” narrates the story of a young girl navigating the challenges of middle school while wanting nothing more than to be “30, flirty and thriving.” On her 13th birthday, her dreams become reality when she wakes up as a 30-year-old woman working at a magazine publication. During her time as an older woman, Jenna Rink rekindles her relationship with her middle school best friend, Matt Flamhaff. This story, equally heartwarming and captivating, is a must-see romantic comedy.

‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ (2003)

Set in New York City, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” is the epitome of romantic comedies. The film centers around an aspiring female journalist seeking to elevate her advice column with a guide on how to successfully make a man leave you in 10 days. Meanwhile, a young man overly confident in his romantic allure is desperate to prove that he can make any girl fall in love with him. When their paths cross, each character’s end goal is put to the test. Despite their relationship being doomed from the start, the chemistry between the two is undeniable. Moreover, the storyline is artfully performed, with lines of irony accompanying sweet romantic moments. This rom-com leaves viewers on the edge of their seats, eager to discover what happens next.

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ (2018)

Adapted from Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel, “Crazy Rich Asians” follows the story of Rachel Chu, a Chinese-American professor who visits Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young, to join his family at a wedding. Chu quickly discovers that Young’s family is among Singapore’s richest, which presents numerous challenges. Chu struggles to balance her love for her affluent boyfriend with her identity as a first-generation Chinese immigrant. Complex and engaging, “Crazy Rich Asians” is a uniquely refreshing rom-com that includes comical and passionate moments as well as an exploration into the essence of privilege, socioeconomic class and background.

‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ (1961)

This list would be incomplete without the old classic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Holly Golightly, an unconventional society girl, falls in love with writer Paul Varjak. The film is one of the most popular in the “unexpected lovers” trope, where romance between the two unlikely lovers bloomed throughout the film. Filled with scenes unearthing themes of growth, hope and the meaning of true love, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is a remarkably heartfelt and sweet movie. This classic is well worth a watch next time movie night rolls around.
