The Standard celebrates NSPA awards at National Journalism Convention

The Standard wins multiple awards from the National Scholastic Press Association at the JEA-NSPA National Journalism Convention in Missouri Nov. 12. Members of the Editorial Board along with the Media Team traveled to Missouri for the convention, where they participated in journalism workshops and attended an awards ceremony.

The Standard received awards from the National Scholastic Press Association at the JEA-NSPA National Journalism Convention in Missouri Nov. 12.  

Editor-in-Chief Grace Hamilton (’23), who won First Place for Editorial Leadership in the NSPA Best of Show competition, said she loved seeing the editors awarded for their effort. 

“That hard work paid off,” Hamilton said. “It was fun to see that in sort of a very solid way, and I think it was a good moment of celebration.”

At the convention, Lead Culture Editor Clara Martinez (’24) won Honorable Mentions in the 2022 Interactive Graphic and News Story of the Year categories and Features Editor: Print Emeritus Zainab Adil (’22) won an Honorable Mention for the Artist of the Year category.

In the Journalism Education Association National Student Media Contests, Daniel de Beer (’23) won an Excellent in Editorial Writing, Maarya Shafqat Adil (’24) won an Honorable Mention in Literary Magazine photography, Rudi Chamria (’24) won an Honorable Mention for Commentary Writing, Eden Leavey (’24) won an Honorable Mention in Press Law and Ethics and Clara Martinez (’24) won an Honorable Mention in Newswriting.

The Standard was also recognized as Pacemaker Finalist for the 2021-22 issues. In the NSPA Best of Show competition, the staff won Third Place in the newspaper category and Sixth Place for the website.

Hamilton said it felt especially rewarding to place in the newspaper category as the team overcame obstacles when creating the issue. 

“It was a busy start of the year,” Hamilton said. “We all managed to pull it together in the end … I was very proud of the team.”

Ultimately, Hamilton said she enjoyed witnessing the publication be awarded for its work in a formal setting. 

“It was a rewarding thing to see our work being recognized by the NSPA in this official setting with a bunch of other amazing newspapers and publications,” Hamilton said. “That itself was very rewarding and just fun to see what we’ve all been working on be recognized in that high-level way.”
