Grade 10 students beat Grade 12 students 21-18 in the first round of the all-grade basketball tournament Nov. 30. Organized by the Student Council, the game took place during lunch in the Farmer Gym.
Remony Burlingame (’25), one of the Grade 10 players, said it felt good for her and the rest of her grade to win against Grade 12.
“There was lots of chatter afterwards,” Burlingame said. “People were very excited.”
Burlingame said Grade 10 ended victorious because of their hustle.
“Our rebounding was very good and that helped us get fast breaks,” Burlingame said.
Alex Okpoyo (’23), who played on the Grade 12 team, said the loss against Grade 10 was unexpected.
“It was a bit disappointing to have lost the game,” Okpoyo said. “But the sophomores’ team weren’t too bad, so that’s something you just have to live with.”
In hindsight, Okpoyo said the Grade 12 team lost because they were too relaxed.
“It was just the mentality at which we came into the game,” Okpoyo said. “We were very nonchalant, and I feel like the other team, the sophomores were quite fast and, like, were just doing a lot.”
The Grade 9 versus Grade 11 game took place in the Farmer Gym simultaneously, and Grade 11 won 29-19. The Grade 10 and 11 teams will go head to head in the finals Dec. 7 at the end of lunch in the Farmer Gym, for a prize of “bragging rights and spirit points,” according to Student Council Representative Marcus Chae (’24).
Burlingame said the finals will be more intense than the game against Grade 12, and the sophomores are prepared.
“I think everyone was a little bit relaxed this time,” Burlingame said. “But now we’re gonna really bring it.”
