The South Asia Club held South Asia Night April 27 in the Commons. The event included traditional decorations, dancing, a spicy food contest and live performances.
South Asia Club faculty sponsor Neil Basu said he was proud of the efforts made to organize the event.
“I thought the leadership team this year was particularly strong, doing both the announcing and organizing before, helping out with the food service,” Basu said. “I thought it was a great student collaboration.”
In addition to live entertainment, students set up stalls for charity donations. A ticket stand at the entrance of the event collected money to donate to Magic Bus, a charity that works to lift youth in India out of poverty. Another stall sold bracelets and cookies.
Dasha Rahman (’25) worked to prepare for the event as the South Asia Club’s social media coordinator, and said earnings are going towards “Save the Children,” an organization that works with underprivileged children. She said the success of the charity donations added to her enjoyment of the night.
“It was really fun, we got a lot of different people to come and it was a group effort for the night to come together,” Rahman said. “We worked hard and the outcome was spectacular.”
Furthermore, South Asia Club Co-Vice President Sophia Ahmad (’25), said she enjoyed how the event enabled students and their families to come together.
“I’m glad we host South Asia Night every year,” Ahmad said. “I’m glad that our community can come together to celebrate our culture and have fun.”
Club member Saira Mundassery (’26) attended the event and said the eighth-grade girls’ dance went particularly well.
“I thought the eighth-grade performance was really cool and it was fun to watch,” Mundassery said. “It was good to see their hard work pay off.”
Basu said he enjoyed the spirit that the night created among all attendees.
“As an advisor for this event for a really long time, I love how it brings the community together, Lower, Middle and High School,” Basu said. “Post-COVID the club has been doing a good job of getting people to come to school events.”
