The Grammys, a prestigious awards ceremony for music presented by the Recording Academy, offers an opportunity for top designers to showcase their latest designs. While a dress code isn’t explicitly stated, most attendees follow a black or white tie code. Lavish dresses and eye-catching outfits are often featured on the red carpet.
While the Grammys usually showcase amazing outfits, some of this year’s outfits missed the mark.
Doja Cat
American rapper and singer Doja Cat stepped onto the runway in a gown by Dilara Findikoglu. The look was composed of a low-cut, skin-tone matching dress paired with a camouflage print hat, black glasses and various silver cross jewelry. Additionally, the rapper displayed many temporary tattoos under her see-through dress and across her forehead.
While the adventurous, daring looks Doja Cat is known for are often captivating, this year, it didn’t land well. The transparent dress matched her skin tone almost too well, which resulted in a drab look, with a monotonous color scheme. The low-cut dress left many shocked and afraid of a wardrobe malfunction as she appeared to be nearly naked. Moreover, her camouflage hat and black glasses failed to align with the rest of the look, creating an uncomfortable sense of discontinuity.

Ed Sheeran
English singer Ed Sheeran, nominated for “Best Pop Vocal Album,” walked the red carpet in a plaid camouflage jacket featuring many pockets and buckles paired with matching pants. Under the jacket, he wore a simple black shirt and black trainers.
The plaid base with a daring camouflage print on top created a chaotic and busy look. Even though the pants and jacket were a matching set, they still managed to look uncoordinated and messy because of the clashing prints. For an event as highly esteemed as the Grammys, the painful combination of patterns appeared unfit when seen alongside the greatest looks the fashion world has to offer.

Chrissy Teigen
American supermodel and television personality Chrissy Teigen walked the red carpet wearing a piece designed by Sophie Couture. The look consisted of a black ruffled mini dress with a skirt composed of bright pink three-dimensional flowers. The outfit was paired with black high heels, accentuating the flowers and matching the color of the dress bodice.
Teigen’s outfit lacked finesse with the flowers looking out of place, as if they had been stuck on randomly, and the fabric looking like paper. For such an important event, the outfit was left looking rushed and of poor quality. Moreover, the bodice of the dress lacked design and consisted of little to no detail, emphasizing the clear lack of planning that occurred while crafting the dress. Although pink and black do look aesthetically pleasing together, the overall design of the dress was bizarre, and the color combination was not enough to carry the look to success.

Miley Cyrus
American singer-songwriter and actress Miley Cyrus, who would win “Record of the Year” and the award for “Best Pop Solo Performance,” wore a Maison Margiela dress. The dress consisted of intricate gold safety pins attached to one another creating a bodice, skirt, collar and undergarments, creating the appearance of a transparent gold mesh dress. The outfit was the length of a mini dress, though the chains flowed down at different lengths.
Although the idea of the dress seemed unique and innovative, the outfit was too abstract, with the dress consisting of nothing other than safety pins; the dress had no other detail or edge. The bottom of the dress had an uneven finish with the safety pins drooping at different lengths, causing the overall appearance to look incomplete. Additionally, the monochromatic colors of the dress created a generic look.

Lenny Kravitz
American singer-songwriter Lenny Kravitz attended the Grammys in an outfit designed by Rick Owens consisting of a translucent black shirt with black netting worn with black skinny jeans and a leather bolero.
The all-black fit could have looked chic if it weren’t for the outdated skinny jeans and mesh shirt. The two did not complement each other, and although separately they may have looked stylish, the pieces of clothing were too different stylistically to create a unified look. In addition, the bolero distorted the shape of the shirt below, making it look as if Kravitz was wearing a mesh box. The failure to create a flattering design resulted in a disappointing look.

The Oscars are set to take place March 10, offering up another opportunity for designers to exhibit their pieces. Hopefully, their designs prove more inspired than those at the Grammys.
