For the past three years, The Standard has kept a record of sources used in each article – in print, online and social media – to ensure that we are representing a range of voices and subjects in our coverage. To be completely transparent about our progress with prioritizing diversity in our coverage and striving to uphold the standards set out by our Diversity Statement, the editorial board has decided to publish the data for the first time.
The staff is not directly representative of the High School student body and neither is our use of sources. Through recording the diversity of the content that we publish, we aim to continuously reassess our efficacy in accurately representing the voices and perspectives of the student body.
The editorial board compiled the data from 124 sources interviewed for stories published from Jan. 8 to March 8. We recognize that there are many more benchmarks to track diversity, but we are only able to synthesize the information that is asked of every source: the person’s preferred pronouns and their role in the school.
