Varsity Girls Basketball:
Record: 5-2
Led by captain Louisa Phillips (’15) and point guard Caroline Dibble (’16), varsity girls basketball has impressed thus far. Captain Phillips feels that the team has had a few major standouts, especially lowerclassmen. She said that Claire Noel (’17) “keeps our offense going by always finding a path to drive to the basket.” Another standout, Mia Holtze (’18), “has transitioned well” into her new position from playing in the paint in middle school to a guard role on the team. Dibble runs the point and “has stepped up as a leader this year.”
Phillips, the captain, feels confident in her team rolling into the ISSTs.
Varsity Boys Basketball:
Record: 6-3
Varsity boys basketball has been successful so far, including big wins against the International School in Doha and Egham. The team is led by captains Anton Foy (’15) and James Callaway (’15). Jack Glen (’16), Nelson Boachie-Yiadom (’17) and Oliver Chene (’16) make up the rest of the regular starting lineup.
The team suffered a bruising 60-50 loss to Doha this past Friday in their third game in three days after winning the first two.
The team looks strong going into the later parts of the season.
JV Boys Basketball:
Record: 4-0
JV Boys basketball has hit the ground running, winning their first four games. Led by captain Luke Bandeen (’17), their hot start has been high scoring.
They have large margins of victory, defeating TASIS by 22, Mill Hill by 39,William Ellis School by 15 and Hillingdon by 37.
JV Girls Basketball:
Record: 5-1
With just one loss, the JV team has looked promising.
Co-captain Kara Fallin (’17) credited the freshmen on the team for a solid season so far. They are “all strong players with great athleticism and passion for basketball,” she said.
Fallin also highlighted her co-captain Sophia Linkas (’17) and Taegen Kopfler (’17) for great performances down the stretch.
Captain Fallin feels very confident going into the final stretch of the season.
JJV Boys Basketball:
Record: 5-3
JJV has come out of the gates running, winning several games by more than 15 points this season.
With a mix of upperclassmen and young underclassmen talent, this team has impressed in the beginning of the season.
Matthew Clement (’18) and Sourna Daneshvar (’18) headline the mass of younger players, while Brendan LaScala (’15) and Edward Black (’16) are among the older players bringing experience to the team.
Varsity Rugby
Record: 6-2 (5-0 vs. International Schools)
U18 rugby has performed well through the first half of the Winter season. Success was expected after an entire fall season spent training. With a new coach coming in the early winter and a new assistant coach coming in December, the rugby team has had little time to mold with new systems, but have performed well.
ASL rugby defeated Cobham twice, once at Canons Park (14-10) and once at Allianz Park (14-12). Their other matchup with an international school came against TASIS, where ASL was victorious by way of a 12-5 score line.
This past weekend, ASL rugby defeated the American School in Paris twice. The first game came by way of a 69-0 victory, and the second game ending at with a scoreline of 34-0. This was a nice two-game homestand and shut out for the Pirates.
Two losses to British powerhouses, Merchant Taylors and Harrow RFC, are the only blemishes on the record. ASL did defeat one British school, Haberdashers’, with a 72-10 thrashing.
JV Rugby:
Record: 0-1-2
JV Rugby has made huge strides this year as a very young team with a lot of time to grow. Led by captain Ryleigh Cornelius (’18), the team made up of nearly all freshmen has been working towards getting comfortable with the game and learning the ways of ASL rugby.
This past weekend against Ealing Rugby, the JV team were able to draw 17-17 in a very hard fought game. This team is looking better as the season progresses.
Crew:
In just one race this season, the ASL crew team performed admirably. Tyler Skow (’17) finished third, and Andrew Bake (’15) came in fourth. Captain Bake is confident in the team, saying the season “is looking promising” after just one race as a team.
Their next race comes on the weekend of February 6th.
Swimming:
In their first meet of the year on the 23rd of January, the ASL swim team were a force to be reckoned with, as swimmers registered 41 collective personal best times. Emmanuelle Gers (’16) was victorious in her 100m butterfly and 200m IM. Sissel Anderson (’18) won the 100m breaststroke.
ASL varsity girls came in first and second place, respectively, in the 200m freestyle relay and the 200m IM relay.
Dance:
The Dance team has performed at several varsity games this season. Co-captain Cammie Rosen (’16) said that “this season has been one of our most successful, but also one of our most challenging. With only having a of couple days to learn each dance the team has shown amazing commitment and determination.”
She feels that “everyone has improved in their own way” this year and that “this will only continue throughout the rest of the season.”
